Winter wasn't the type to sleep easy, not here, not home, not anywhere.
Her dreams were often plagued by nightmares she'd rather swallow acid than admit to having, forcing her wide awake, condemned to sit through the lonely dark, until dawn came and she slept out of sheer exhaustion at best.
She could never sleep a full 8 hours either. It was always increments of twos and threes. Sometimes fours at the very best.
Now, leaning against a tree, she watched the others. Some looked anxious, or worried. Others seemed not to care at all. Some were even sleeping peacefully, and oh how she envied them that.
She leaned her head back against the bark of the tree, not minding as its sharp edges and bumps attempted to scrape at her soft skin.
Winter was frustrated with herself, angry that she had blown up so very profusely earlier, feeling as if she'd let far too much of herself out with her words. What if they found out? What if they asked! She didn't like people poking around in her history with curious eyes and curious-er questions. Still... perhaps it wouldn't be so bad to talk about it for a change? She'd never told anyone. Maybe she was allowing it to become a burden on her soul, turning it as black as the monsters who destroyed her village, tainting it with the sorrow and rage borne only from pure hate and grief.
Winter closed her eyes and the memory of that little girl, bleeding in her arms as the light fled her eyes, flashed through again. She raised a hand to her head, trying to quiet her thoughts and push the image out. She remembered death. So much death. Blood. Screams. Fire. Pain. Why couldn't they have left her alone when she escaped the first time?! Why did they search for her?!
And where was he? ...This was his fault. He led them to her, who else could have done it?!
She was so young, so naive, such a fool to believe that beautiful vampire could have loved anyone.
This was her fault. For trusting in monsters and treating them like men.
It was her fault her family, her village, her Sera, was dead.
Forcing her eyes open again, the flames and screams and horror were gone.
All that remained was the dusty night sky as it grew ever increasingly dark.
She exhaled and tilted her neck side to side to loosen the muscles. When would the pain end?
Perhaps this was her punishment. Perhaps this was what she deserved.
Perhaps.

On the other side of their little makeshift camp, which, really wasn't much of a camp and more of a group huddle, Lilumae sat quietly. In her hands she held a book that looked worn and well-read, her eyes were scanning the pages swiftly and her fingers could almost not keep up as she flipped through from one to the next. Surprisingly though, she looked slightly bored. It seemed she'd read this one so many times that it lacked the excitement a regular book would have for her. For some reason, she felt eyes on her and tilted her head up, to look around. Lilumae had poor night vision, and as such struggled to peer into the ever increasing darkness around her.
Perhaps it was her mind playing tricks on her?
