Pickpocketing skill plateaus hard—am I doing it wrong?

I'm on my second playthrough (level 31, playing on Switch) and I've been grinding pickpocketing since early game, but my success rate feels stuck around 60-70% even though my skill is in the 60s. I know the Pickpocket perks help, but I'm not sure which ones actually matter or if I'm just approaching it wrong. Should I be targeting specific item weights, or is there a threshold where it just gets easier? Also—is it worth leveling past a certain point or does it cap out usefulness-wise?

The plateau you're hitting is actually pretty normal, and it's not really about doing it "wrong" - it's just how the mechanic scales. Your success chance is based on a formula that weighs your Pickpocket skill against the target's level and the item weight, so even at 60s you're still going to whiff a lot on higher-level NPCs or heavy stuff.

The perks matter way more than raw skill though. There's one early on that boosts your success chance by a flat percentage, and then later there's one that makes pickpocketing items from people way easier. Those two alone will feel like night and day compared to grinding without them. There's also the one that lets you pickpocket equipped items, which opens up a ton of options if you're going for specific gear.

On Switch you're stuck with vanilla, so no mods to help you here, but honestly the game's designed around this grind. If you want to level it faster without the tedium, just target light stuff on low-level NPCs - gold, potions, lockpicks. You'll hit 90+ eventually and yeah, it does get noticeably easier, but the perks are doing most of the heavy lifting, not the skill number itself. Usefulness-wise it caps out pretty quick once you have the key perks, so don't feel like you need to min-max it to 100.

That's solid advice, but I'll add - if you're at 60s and haven't grabbed the perk that lets you pickpocket equipped gear yet, do that first. Seriously changes the game because suddenly you're not limited to stuff sitting in inventories. Way more targets become viable.

Also worth noting: the formula punishes you harder on heavier items than people realize. A single gold coin is basically a guaranteed hit even on a bandit chief, but trying to swipe a dagger off someone your level? That's where the success rate tanks. So if you're testing yourself on daggers and armor, yeah, you're gonna feel like you're plateauing. Switch to light junk, get your skill up to the 80s-90s range, and revisit the harder stuff - it'll feel genuinely different.

One thing the previous reply didn't mention though - pickpocketing radiant jobs from the Thieves Guild (the ones where you steal specific items from specific NPCs) actually level the skill pretty decently if you're already doing them. Not as fast as pure grinding, but less mind-numbing. Plus you're getting paid for it.
