Pure destruction mage getting one-shot in Labyrinthian—what am I missing?

I'm running a pure destruction build (level 32, no melee, light armor) and I just hit Labyrinthian for the first time. Frost mages are melting me in like two hits even with Mage Armor up. I've got the perks that boost frost damage reduction and I'm wearing Archmage robes with a couple enchants, but it feels like I'm paper. Am I supposed to be running something else at this level, or is there a perk I'm completely overlooking? Playing on Adept difficulty, USSEP, no mods.

Labyrinthian frost mages are genuinely brutal at that level, ngl. You're not missing a perk — you're just running into the hard ceiling of pure destruction without any defensive layers.

The core problem: Mage Armor only gives you like 50% damage reduction with perks, and frost mages hit hard. You need more than that. A few things that actually help:

One, grab the perk that lets you dual-cast spells for more effect — if you're going pure destruction, you want Augmented Frost (or whatever the frost damage boost line is called) maxed out so you're killing stuff faster. Speed matters more than you think. Two, seriously consider swapping to Atronach Stone for that dungeon run, or respec into it temporarily if you're willing to reload. The magic absorption is a game-changer against casters.

Three — and this is the real answer — you probably need some actual armor. I know pure robes sounds cool, but light armor is cheap to level and you can get decent enchanted pieces without breaking the build. Grab some Elven or Glass pieces, slap a couple Fortify Destruction enchants on them, and suddenly you're not getting one-shot. You're still a mage, you're just not made of paper.

If you really want to stay pure robes, honestly just come back at like level 40. Labyrinthian isn't going anywhere and the scaling gets way kinder.

yeah that advice is solid. I'd add that if you're already running Mage Armor, make sure you're actually casting it before you engage — sounds obvious but a lot of people forget to recast it mid-fight when it drops. On my pure destruction run I kept dying until I realized I was just letting it expire.

also worth knowing: frost mages in there cast pretty aggressively and they will chain-cast if you give them room. so speed matters more than raw damage output. if you're using dual-cast, you're probably already on the right track, but make sure you're not just lobbing fireballs — interrupt them. stagger perks in destruction actually help more than people think for a pure mage, even if you're not going for a control build.

if you really don't want to respec or grab armor, the Atronach Stone swap is genuinely your best move for that specific dungeon. just remember to swap back after because the Atronach Stone drains your magicka regen like crazy, which sucks for pure destruction long-term.
