Speechcraft perks are actually terrible and Persuasion barely matters

I'm on my 5th playthrough and I just realized I've never invested a single point in the Speechcraft tree beyond maybe Haggling, and my character has been fine. Like, completely fine. I can pass speech checks without perks, I can just reload if I fail, or I can literally just... not talk to people and do the quest anyway.

Compare that to, say, Pickpocketing where even one perk makes a massive difference, or Sneak where you're basically gimped without investing early. Speechcraft just sits there doing almost nothing. Persuasion is a coin flip that doesn't matter because the quest progresses either way. Intimidation is a worse coin flip. Bribe is just "pay gold" which you can do anyway.

Am I missing something or is this tree just fundamentally pointless? The only time I've ever felt like speech perks mattered was when I was doing a pure roleplay run where I forced myself to only use dialogue, and even then it felt more like self-imposed challenge than the perks actually being good.

Does anyone actually spec into this tree or do you just pump it passively while doing quests?

You're not wrong that it's the weakest tree in the game, but you're also kind of proving why it exists - you don't need it. Speechcraft is a quality of life tree, not a power tree. It's there for people who want to play a talker without save-scumming every dialogue check.

That said, there ARE perks worth grabbing if you're going that route. The one that boosts prices when selling and reduces prices when buying actually saves you a ton of gold over a playthrough, which matters if you're not looting everything. And Persuasion / Intimidation do have some unique dialogue options that lock you out otherwise - not quest-breaking, but they exist. The issue is none of this is necessary, which is the whole problem.

Compare to Pickpocket where you literally cannot steal anything without perks, or Sneak where guards will detect you instantly without investment. Speechcraft is optional in a way those aren't. It's a tree designed for a specific playstyle (smooth-talking diplomat) that most people don't commit to because, yeah, you can just reload or ignore the dialogue entirely.

I think the real takeaway is that Skyrim's dialogue system is shallow enough that perks can't really save it. A perk can't make dialogue more interesting, it can just make it easier. So unless you're genuinely roleplaying a bard or diplomat, there's no reason to touch it.
