Switch performance tanking after 40+ hours—normal or am I pushing it?

I'm about 40 hours into my Switch playthrough and the game's started stuttering like crazy, especially in Whiterun and any dungeon with lots of enemies. Frame rate dips are making combat feel sluggish. Is this just how the Switch version handles longer saves, or did I mess something up? Playing vanilla, no mods obviously. Should I just accept it or is there something I can actually do about it?

Yeah, that's pretty normal for the Switch version honestly. The engine just isn't great at handling large save files, and Whiterun specifically is a performance killer on console because of how many NPCs and objects are loaded at once. You're not doing anything wrong.

A few things that might help a bit: try fast traveling out of problem areas and back in - sometimes that clears the cache enough to get a frame rate bump for a while. Avoid keeping massive stacks of items in your inventory if you can help it; I know that sounds silly but the Switch really does struggle with it. And if you're in a dungeon getting bad stuttering during combat, try dropping some loot you don't need and picking it back up later - sounds dumb but it genuinely helps.

The real answer though is that you're just hitting the wall of what the Switch can do. It's not a hardware thing you can "fix" - it's the save file getting too complex for the processor to handle smoothly. Some people report it gets worse the longer you play, others say it plateaus. Just depends on your specific playthrough. If it's making combat unplayable you might need to start fresh, but if it's just occasional stuttering, you can probably push through.

Yeah, that's the reality of it. I've done a couple Switch playthroughs and hit the same wall around the 50-60 hour mark myself. The previous reply nailed the core issue - it's just how the engine handles save bloat on weaker hardware.

One thing I'd add: if you're doing a ton of crafting (smithing, enchanting, alchemy), that can accelerate the problem. Every item you create, every spell you cast, every NPC you kill - it all gets logged in your save file. Not saying don't play the game, just be aware that a character who's crafted 200 iron daggers is gonna tank performance worse than one who mostly just loots and sells. Doesn't mean you have to stop, but it's worth knowing.

Also, if you haven't already, make sure you're not carrying around a bunch of quest items or books you don't need. I know inventory management sounds tedious, but the Switch version is genuinely sensitive to it. Drop stuff at your player home if you're a hoarder.

Real talk though - if combat's getting genuinely sluggish and it's killing your fun, a fresh start with a different build might actually be worth it. You've got 40 hours of experience now so you'll blaze through the early game anyway. But if it's just occasional stuttering in Whiterun and you're still enjoying yourself, you can probably finish this playthrough fine.
