That's really sad..

I think this has less to do with RPing than it does realism and game mechanics.

It's true, if you maximize your character too much throughout the game you will be left with a god-like being that doesn't really die in any situation thrown at you (resto warrior, I'm pointing at you!)

This can be fun for a while but I found that lack of challenge was the main reason I rerolled. Those first 30 hours or so of game play always feel so real and well balanced but if you choose too many perks aligned to the same skill (e.g. 5/5 armsman and dragonplate smithing) you'll find the game isn't challenging at all. I don't think there is any greater sign that you've broken the game when you start to find master difficulty easy.

It's great that you have the option to make a sword that can kill most enemies in less than 10 strikes but it isn't actually practical if you want a challenging and rewarding gaming experience, for me anyway. In fact in my most recent play through I've made sure to not over-invest in multiplier perks such as armsman and juggernaut. I found that all these perks really do is make me want to turn up the difficulty which to me is a waste of a perk.

I'd much rather maintain the same challenge of game play with a lower difficulty than a higher one. That way I can turn up the difficulty to master and have a very hard fight even at higher levels and keep back perks that I can put somewhere that will make my overall experience more rich and diverse as opposed to more easy!

I usually never upgrade smithing. I just craft a few Iron Daggers, enchant them, sell them, and ask Eorlund to train me. Yes, I'm that lazy. But I don't over do it. Like, if I get to lvl 22 already with Ebony Armor, something is wrong. Since the NPC start to pop up with Ebony Ingot on the 27, I feel like I have a way too good armor before my time. BUT, I'll probably not make up a story that makes my character upgrade it's smithing the regular way, since I think Smith is the most boring thing in the whole game. At least Enchanting goes a little faster.

Just mah 2 cents here.

I play both ways. I have a few rp characters that aren't overpowered and I have one that has super, enchants/Smithing. I appreciate having the option to do either. I don't think it's sad at all that some people power game it and move on to another game. I don't see what business that is of mine. I won't criticize any play style. Who's to say whose right and frankly there are bigger things I worry about.

I RP. I also like playing in third person. I tend to only go into first person for archery or if I want a closer look at something but I'm not forced to play that way.

Hello there folks.
I've seen the progress of Skyrim since it's release and I really must say one thing , don't take this as another whine or something like that , I really feel that I must tell this.
It's so sad seeing the way people play the game , everyone shouts at me "PEOPLE CAN PLAY THE WAY THEY WANT" , but really.
What I mostly see in videos and comments are "LOLZ! I can one-shot legendary dragonz with my super magical daedrik daggers when I'm level 81 !!" , or I see people who enter their inventory and take 15 potions one after another and then change their whole armor in the middle of the fight.
Seriously , this is a ROLE-PLAYING game !!! , why do I see 5 normal people who are Role-Playing and the other 50,000 who take this game as CoD ?
The way people play does matter , after Bethesda see how people play TES they will remove EVEN MORE complex systems , " Oh hey you don't want story ? OK! here have level 200 cap ".

Tell me what do you think.
I will tell you what i think... I think you are an ass :) Bethesda know how people play the game, der they made it. There are many different ways actually as people has said so basically you are wrong.

The one benefit to this thread is to read the thoughts of people who might share your RPing philosophy like Pileggi or KyleeKay, but don't feel the need to tell me or any other to "do as they do".

This forum has also opened my eyes to the world of RPing and blogging accounts of their characters, and because I like to challenge myself I might craft a character with a story and an immutable playstyle. Not because you pushed me into it with rules and shame, but because others have pulled me in with their passion and love of their characters.

Think positivity, instead of negativity. Results could be drastically different.

It's so sad seeing the way people play the game...
You have no logical basis to assess what percentage of people are playing the game one way or another. In the first week alone Steam detected over 230,000 users playing Skyrim concurrently. That's exclusive of those that were playing without a live Steam connection and all the Xbox and PS3 players. Over 10,000,000 copies of the game have been sold so a sampling of a few dozen Skyrim videos on Youtube won't allow you to draw any kind of intelligent conclusion about how the game is being played. In general using videos from Youtube is a horrible way to assess how the player community is playing the game as, for the most part, no one makes roleplaying videos because there's no audience for such vapidly boring subject matter for video.
Oh wow how stupid I am , I really forgot about this one , but you know , Bethesda saw that the players of Oblivion in Europe ( poll I guess ) were mostly playing in third person.
And what we got in Skyrim ? Forced third person in every corner.. ( True Story )
You must be playing a special version of Skyrim because there's no forced third person in every corner of the game. Third person view, by the way, is an option that's typically only found in roleplaying games. There's a reason why the genre of games like Call of Duty are called First Person Shooter games.

I understand what the topic creator is saying, but at the same time, yeah, people can play how they want. The same thing goes for basically any game. When I play Call of Duty (and, yes, I have played this), I disagree with people who camp in the corner and snipe me. I've tried it and it seems like a boring way of playing, but people enjoy it. It's in the rules of the game, so it's kind of a case of whatever.

I think you came across too aggressively with your point of view.

"The way people play does matter , after Bethesda see how people play TES they will remove EVEN MORE complex systems , " Oh hey you don't want story ? OK! here have level 200 cap "... I really don't think that would ever happen. As you said, this is technically an RPG; I don't see Bethesda saying "Oh well! Let's throw all the rules out the window." They'd have a lot of angry RP'ers on their hands.

I could not read this and think one thing: Mass Effect. Have you ever played? The first game was a straight up RPG game. It was awesome and many still consider it one of the greatest games ever. Then in the subsequent releases (Mass Effect II and III) they downplayed the RPG elements, enhanced the action elements, and by the third and final installment, it was a completely different game. The ME community was in an uproar and many RPG gamers' feelings were hurt (mine among them, to a degree).

I don't think Bethesda would ever change the formula of TES series because it's a tried and proven method, but when you said that, I had flashbacks to "RPG vs Shooter" threads that lined the halls of BioWare's official forums. I feel like I'm a little off topic, but surely there's someone out there who can commiserate with me. Right?

In my experience, Skyrim is easier to play than Oblivion. The levelling system is simpler. You can make a powerful character without keeping tabs on how each and every one of your skills is increasing just so you don't accidentally level and get only 3 or 4 points rather than 5. That aspect of Oblivion infuriated me because having to do math just to make a character that didn't get owned in every third encounter was terribly immersion breaking. Sometimes I like to play video game that make me think heavily about levelling strategy. But sometimes, I like to roleplay.

In that way, I think Skyrim is a much more roleplay friendly and immersive game. If anything, I feel that Bethesda is going further into the realm of immersion, not away from it.

ETA: But alas I don't have your experience with Mass Effect. I never played it. So if you're seeing a worrying trend, I can't argue with you there. It's possible Bethesda could veer in that direction. But I think if they did, they'd rapidly veer back. At least, I'd hope so.

I have actually read a couple of this persons threads, just to see why he has so many bad reps, and what i have read brings me to only one conclusion.
I dont think this person has actually got the game. i think he just watches youtube and comments only on what he sees, not on what he knows.

Oh really ?
Then how do you explain the fact that I have logged 524 hours into Skyrim ?
