Vivec City in ESO vs the Tribunal Temple - why does the lore feel backwards?

Been replaying the Morrowind chapter and something's been nagging at me. In ESO, Vivec is this massive, active city-state with the whole Tribunal cult still going strong, right? But then you get to Skyrim's era and the Temple is basically a ghost of what it was, people are abandoning the faith left and right, and Vivec himself is... well, we don't really know where he went.

The thing that gets me is ESO makes it feel like the Tribunal are these untouchable divine forces, but lore-wise we know the Heart of Lorkhan is what powered them. And in the time between ESO and Skyrim, something fundamentally breaks. The Dunmer go from "our gods walk among us" to "maybe they were never really gods at all." That's a massive shift and I feel like ESO kind of glosses over how that actually happens?

Like, does anyone have a solid read on what the in-game books say about the Tribunal's decline? Because I've been going through some of the older texts and the timeline feels fuzzy. The Dunmer in Skyrim act like it's this slow cultural death, but ESO's Morrowind chapter makes them seem so confident in their divinity. Something catastrophic has to happen between those two points and I'm not sure the lore actually explains it cleanly.

You're hitting on something real here. The Heart of Lorkhan powering them is the key - that's established pretty clearly in the older lore - but yeah, ESO kind of presents the Tribunal at their height without really setting up the dominoes that fall afterward.

The thing is, between ESO and Skyrim there is catastrophic stuff: the Red Year, the Oblivion Crisis fallout, the whole collapse of the Temple's institutional power. But you're right that ESO doesn't really lean into how that erodes faith in a way that feels inevitable. It's more like the game just shows you "Vivec is amazing, the Temple is strong" and then... cut to Skyrim where it's all crumbling, without the connective tissue.

I think part of it is just that ESO is set centuries earlier and has to show Morrowind as a functioning society, so it can't really dwell on the decline without making the whole zone feel doomed. But narratively it does create this weird tonal whiplash where the Dunmer go from worshipping living gods to basically admitting those gods were powered by a dead guy's heart. That's not a slow cultural death, that's a theological bomb going off, and I'm not sure the in-game books actually walk you through how people processed that shift.

Have you found any specific texts that try to explain the transition? I feel like there should be something addressing how the faith collapsed but I'm drawing a blank on the details.
