Why does Karstaag wreck pure mages so hard compared to melee builds?

So I'm on my third pure destruction playthrough and just hit the Karstaag fight in Glacial Cave. Got absolutely demolished. Frost resistance potions, Mage Armor perks, the works. Meanwhile I remember my melee character just walking up and hitting him with a sword and it felt way more manageable.

Is this a leveled list thing or am I just building wrong? Like, he's a frost giant so obviously he has insane frost resistance and I can't really leverage my main damage type. But even switching to shock and fire spells, his AI just tanks everything and closes distance instantly. By the time I'm casting anything he's already swinging at me and I'm getting staggered into oblivion.

Melee characters can at least block and power bash him out of attacks. What am I supposed to do as a pure caster besides kite around the arena and hope my summons tank? Because my dremora lord gets shredded almost as fast as I do.

Yeah, Karstaag's basically a melee-favored fight by design. He's got that massive health pool, frost immunity so you can't leverage your main school, and his AI is aggressive enough that he closes distance faster than you can reliably cast. The stagger-spam is the real killer for mages - you get interrupted mid-cast and suddenly you're eating a greatsword to the face while trying to recover.

The summon thing is rough because his damage output is just tuned high enough that even a tanky summon doesn't buy you enough time. Your Dremora Lord should theoretically work better than most summons since it's got decent survivability, but if he's still getting shredded you might be underlevel or just hitting a wall where the fight's math doesn't favor pure destruction.

Honestly, if you're not willing to respec, kiting + ranged attacks is kind of it. Shock spells will at least apply status effects and don't get completely walled by his resistances like frost does. Mayhem / Fury spells could theoretically help if you've got Apocalypse or another spell mod, but vanilla you're mostly just stalling. Some people cheese it with invisibility and backstab-tier damage, but that's not really a "pure mage" solution.

The real answer is probably that pure destruction just struggles with high-armor, high-health enemies who close distance fast. Melee gets block + power bash + mobility tools that destruction doesn't have. Not saying the build is bad, just that this particular fight exposes the weakness pretty hard.
